What to Expect, Initial Visit
At Innovation Chiropractic Manhattan each patient will be thoroughly examined during the initial visit. During this time we will be trying to pinpoint the exact cause of your condition so then the appropriate treatment can be provided. At our office we will identify if you are presenting with joint restrictions, muscular tightness and/or weakness, biomechanical dysfunction, postural distortions and any other dysfunctions that may be contributing to your condition. Each patient is provided with treatment that is appropriate for their issue. No patient or condition is ever exactly the same, thus each patient is provided with their own individual care. Listed below are the services we offer.
Various Techniques We Use
Spinal and Extremity Adjustments are provided to patients who present with joints that are restricted, painful and limit the normal range of motion. During these adjustments a gentle force is specifically applied into a joint to help release it from it’s restricted state. The goal of this treatment is to restore the normal motion back into the joint and thus restore range of motion and decrease pain. With all of our adjustments the patient is examined to ensure that the treatment is necessary and screened to ensure that the technique is safe for them. Adjustments are only applied if necessary. In our office we always treat joint restrictions with muscle care to ensure that the patient is provided with complete treatment. Most often adjustments alone only provide short relief.
Myofascial release targets releasing the tightness and shortness of muscles and connective tissue that surrounds it (fascia). Almost all of our patients are provided with this care due to muscle dysfunction, loss of flexibility, decreased range of motion, improper biomechanics and pains. Often times due to poor habits such as sitting long durations or improper workout motions a patient will begin to cause micro- tears in muscles, tendons and ligaments. Over time the body begins to develop fibrous “scar-tissue” adhesions that limit muscle and joint motion and leads to pain in the region. During evaluation, if these findings are present we use several techniques that are designed to release tension, “free” adhesions and restore the tissues to better motion.
Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation (FAKTR) uses a combination of hands-on and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). It is a form of myofascial release that uses function with treatment of the kinetic chain while utilizing various forms of rehabilitation at the same time. FAKTR therapy includes treating the condition in the position that causes provocation. By treating a condition in the position that causes the pain it allows a faster and more specific treatment. This technique is highly effective with athletes and really helps with restoring motion, decreasing pain and releasing myofascial adhesions.
Rehabiliation Exercises will be given to a patient based on their condition. It is important that once mobility and pain decreases, stability and strength are added to prevent symptoms from returning. At Innovation Chiropractic Manhattan each patient will be coached to unsure that they are using the correct muscles and performing the proper form. Each patient will be taught various levels of exercises and how to properly perform these exercises so then they can retain motion and be pain-free.
The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a comprehensive movement based diagnostic system used to classify movement patterns and direct manual therapy and therapeutic exercise interventions. This system uses 7 different full body movement patterns to assess and help diagnose possible dysfunctions. This system allows the provider to determine weakness, tightness and poor motor functions that may be directly or indirectly related to the patient’s complaint. SFMA will look at the entire body’s motions from the neck to ankles and find the improper motions that could be the cause of several issues such as; chronic pain, the reason for improper running or a poor squat.
FTMI Taping is a form of therapeutic taping that is used to help give support and relief to joints, muscles and ligaments. Often times it will be used for patient’s in acute pain to help take tension off of the region to allow the area to heal. It can also be used for athletes or individuals who just need support during a physical activity. This taping helps with retraining muscles that have been neglected or injured by increasing proprioception and it has also been shown to help with reducing swelling and inflammation.
